PASA Welcomes AmeriCorps Members to AfterZone

PASA is excited to announce its partnership with AmeriCorps for the 2017-2018 school year. Funded by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) – the federal agency responsible for volunteering and service programs – AmeriCorps members are now supporting PASA’s AfterZone, which is a citywide system to bring hands on, high quality programs to Providence middle school students after school.

AmeriCorps members are serving a critical role as facilitators in the AfterZone, where they lead cooperative and experiential learning activities with a focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) and inclusive physical activities for youth enrolled in the AfterZone at DelSesto, West Broadway, Nathan Bishop, Esek Hopkins, and Roger Williams Middle Schools. This year’s PASA AmeriCorps members come from Rhode Island (Providence, Woonsocket and Central Falls), Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York and they bring a wide variety of talents. They are musicians, artists, sport coaches, current college students and graduates, and one even founded their own non-profit organization before joining AmeriCorps.

On October 16 AmeriCorps members serving across Rhode Island were officially sworn in at the Opening Day Celebration held at the Rhode Island State House. PASA AmeriCorps member Phredrick Jean-Baptiste (Phreddy) (shown in the photo above) spoke at the event and said, “I choose to serve because I want the next generation to know there are strong role models and that there is a safe environment after school where they can learn and have fun with their peers.”
